Consequently, the North Korean authorities asked international organizations present in the country for help, and provided the various actors with detailed information and statistics on the consequences of this natural disaster (human victims, damaged buildings and infrastructures, agricultural land and crops destroyed or flooded).
TGH requested access to Kangwon Province, including the city of Munchon and the Chonnae District, two out of the worst affected areas. TGH knows these areas quite well, because the NGO has been working for more than five years on a water and sanitation program for the inhabitants of the city of Munchon.
This project aims to rehabilitate the infrastructures supplying the cities of Munchon and Hwaragu with drinking water (production and distribution networks), partly damaged during the recent floods and mudslides. The works will be performed by the People’s Committees of Hwaragu and Munchon, thanks to the equipment provided by the project.
Partnerships will be established with the epidemic control center of Munchon and the Academy of Science in Pyongyang, especially with regard to the analysis of the quality of the water distributed by the rehabilitated network.
The management of natural hazards, particularly at the Hwaragu watershed relatively vulnerable to floods and mudslides during heavy rainfall(houses destroyed, water systems swept away), will be enhanced by the establishment of gabions (metal cages filled with stones), as well as by the completion of specific structures to allow better drainage (reshaping of the gullies, diversion of main rainwater outlets to less vulnerable areas).
