Since 15th April 2023, violent clashes have erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has been concentrated in urban areas, with a significant portion of the initial fighting being in cities including Khartoum, Omdurman, El Obeid, Nyala, and El Fasher. The fighting has already left at least 1,136 people dead and 12,000 wounded as of July 5th (Federal Ministry of Health). As a direct consequence of the fighting and linked to the lack of capacity to cover their basic needs, people have been escaping urban centers. Three months into the conflict, the total estimate of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) across Sudan reached 2.6 million as of July 18th (DTM). The majority of IDPs are staying with host communities, and only a small percentage of them have taken refuge in camps. Refugees have mostly fled to Egypt (255K), Chad (192K) and South Sudan (163K), but also in Central African Republic and in Ethiopia (UNHCR).

Thousands of people keep arriving in Gedaref and Al Jazirah, along Madani road, fleeing Khartoum where the shelling continues and is widespread. Even though more than 1 million persons fled Khartoum, an even more important number remain in the city despite the ongoing conflict and the prevalence of aerial bombing and shelling. Consequently, despite record numbers of displacement, needs in the capital are very high. Access to basic services remains limited by conflict, shortages and damage to health infrastructure, and the current rainy season increases the risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases. Revised 2023 HRP estimates that 24.7 millions of people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The IDPs and refugees numbers are expected to keep rising as the conflict continues and previous ceasefire efforts have failed to halt the conflict.

The consortium wants to ensure access to timely emergency lifesaving multi-sectoral assistance to conflict-affected populations, including access to health and nutrition care, WASH, Shelter/NFI, Protection and Cash services.
