Essential water, sanitation and hygiene services are vital for vulnerable people affected by conflict and indispensable in certain isolated rural areas which have been severely affected by the conflict in Syria. According to OCHA (2020), 42% of the country’s population is still dependent on alternative, often unsafe, water supplies to meet their daily need for water. Communities with no access to the public water networks are generally more at risk of consuming unsafe water, use less water, and allocate a higher percentage of their income to buying water. This also makes them more vulnerable to pandemics such as COVID-19.
This project aims to improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene services for vulnerable populations in Eastern Ghouta and in the governorate of Dara’a. It consists of rehabilitating the water supply and treatment systems. This project will ultimately considerably improve access to essential WASH services for both the host and displaced populations, in order to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
